What are BIAB nails?

BIAB, Build-A-Base, Rubber Base, Gummy Gel… it seems like everyone’s talking about it – but what is it exactly?
BIAB stands for Builder in a Bottle: a strengthening gel in a bottle that you apply like Gel Polish, but that’s strong enough to build up the nail. Perfect for natural nails that need some extra support, without immediately turning to acrylic or hard gel.

Is BIAB different from Build-A-Base or Rubber Base?

No, they’re all brand names for the same type of product: a flexible base gel that’s built up on the natural nail. Whether it says BIAB, Build-A-Base or Rubber Base on the bottle – it all works pretty much the same. Just choose what fits your salon and workflow best.

What can you do with it?

  • Strengthen natural nails without extensions

  • Create a small extension (max. 2–3 mm)

  • Get a natural look (pink, nude or milky tones)

  • Use as a base under Gel Polish for hands or feet

  • Smooth out the nail surface – it levels beautifully

  • Super easy to apply – also great for beginners

  • You can create almost anything with it: Colorboom, Babyboom, French, Glitters, Chrome… whatever you like!

The texture is thinner than traditional gel, so it self-levels and lets you work super fast.

Ugly Duckling Builder Base colors

What colours are available?

At Ugly Duckling, you’ll currently find 18 Build-A-Base shades – all soft tones like pink, nude and milky. Ideal for clients who love a natural look without extra colour. But if you want, you can always apply Gel Polish or Color Gel over it.

Who is BIAB suitable for?

For anyone who wants strong natural nails – hassle-free. Especially for:

  • Clients with short or medium-length nails

  • Nail biters (with proper follow-up)

  • People with thin or porous nails

  • Clients who dislike thick nails

  • Those who don’t want acrylic or hard gel, but still want strength

BIAB is also great for toenails: thin, flexible, and comfortable in shoes.

How do you use it?

  1. Prep the nails (manicure, remove shine, dehydrate)

  2. Apply primer

  3. Apply a thin layer of Build-A-Base Clear – cure 60 sec

  4. Apply a build layer in the colour of your choice – create a slight apex

  5. Cure each nail – lightly file if needed

  6. Apply colour or leave natural

  7. Topcoat and oil – done!

You only need a little product, and hardly any apex – so it’s quick and cost-effective.

What’s the difference with gel?

BIAB is thinner than gel, so it’s less suited for long extensions. But it’s just as strong and lasts perfectly for 3 to 4 weeks.
Gel is harder, and better for advanced structures or specific techniques. But for short nails, BIAB is way more comfortable – especially because it stays thin, is easy to apply, and needs little filing.

💡 Pro tip: Work in thin layers and make sure your product is smooth – that’s how you get the best result with the least effort. And don’t forget to take your photo😉.

Alina
